Father-son team expand their footprint into Texas after 10 years with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®

Written by Jessy Howe

After carefully exploring franchising opportunities, Drew Werling and his father, Tim, teamed up and joined the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system February 2005. They purchased their first franchise, Indianapolis North, and quickly settled into their new roles as business owners.

“We signed for the first franchise when I was only 23 so Dad was a great guide helping and pushing patience,” said Drew. “It’s been a bonding experience and we’ve gotten along much better than most in the same situation.”

Before long they were ready to further expand the brand they had established and went on to purchase Indianapolis West, South, and East in December 2008, taking their total to four franchises. This move secured them with the entire Indianapolis metro market.

Drew first learned of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® through Michigan location in Traverse City, Mich. Here he was able to speak with an already established franchise and get a first-hand look at how the location operated.

“They were very happy with the system’s support and growth opportunities,” Drew said of making his decision to franchise with the company.

Now, as veteran franchisees, Drew and Tim continue to leverage the power of the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand in the Texas market as they recently took over four Fort Worth, Texas locations.

“We are able to use our proven model from Indianapolis to help serve the people of Fort Worth,” said Drew.

While Drew and Tim will use their model in Fort Worth to continue to grow the brand, it’s becoming a trend across the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system to see transferred locations blossom at a fast pace. Over the past six years, the average first year sales increase for transferred locations was 20.7 percent versus that of the previous owner. Additionally, the average referral rate increased 2.6 percent and satisfaction increased 0.11 percent.

“With over six years of record growth, our brand continues to present more opportunities. Drew and Tim have partnered with us over this period to achieve record success,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® CEO Jeff Wesley. “It is exciting as the brand continues to expand its footprint that we see families benefitting from it also. Moving families forward is something our brand has a history of doing and it is incredibly rewarding to see.”

This couldn’t be more accurate for Drew and his team. Indianapolis General Manager Dan Schuch has been able to grow his career with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and move up within the system. With the expansion of the Fort Worth locations, Drew says this continues to present an opportunity for team members to advance.

“The best part about the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system is the network of people always willing to help each other,” Drew said.

Six things to think about when considering franchising

Written by Jessy Howe

The thought of becoming a franchisee might have crossed your mind a time or two, and for good reason. Franchising is a growth business model filled with immense opportunity for you! With a proven track record of success and more people wanting to own their own business, the popularity continues to grow.

With more than 30 years of experience and continuous year-over-year growth, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is the fastest-growing franchised moving company in the country with more than 330 locations worldwide. While getting involved with a successful franchise company is exciting, are you prepared?

Below are six things to consider before joining a franchise system.

Learn the basics
If you wish to be successful, invest the time to learn and fully understand franchising. Do your research and become familiar with franchising terms, the business model, and what becoming a franchisee entails. Read up on success stories and industry news to educate yourself and ensure you have realistic expectations of the opportunity.

Choose the right fit
It is imperative to understand the brand expectations, capability, support, and success. Look at the sustainability of the model and track record of success to help determine if it is the best fit for you. Additionally, explore the brand beyond the numbers. Are they involved in their community? Do they donate to charity?

Assess your needs
Develop a comprehensive business plan that determines timelines, budgets, a competitive analysis, organizational charts, and in-depth details. It is also crucial to understand the start-up costs needed to get your franchise off the ground.

Identify trends
Evaluate the overall health and trends of the brand you are considering franchising with. Identify the success at all levels and in all states/locations. Often times you can speak with already established franchisees and compare how various franchises operate. If the business is more of a fad and will not sustain in the next five-10 years, consider investing your time, energy and money elsewhere.

Establish the opportunities
Determine the unique opportunities, both in business and personally, that the franchise system will be able to provide you. Is there opportunity for growth or expansion? Do your values align with the core values of the brand? Does the business model support your needs long term? Find out the answers to important questions such as these early on.

Be passionate
If you are not energized by the opportunity, it probably is not the right path for you. If you are not passionate and dedicated to what you are going to do, it will be difficult to find happiness and success in your business.

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® our core purpose is to move people forward. We love to serve our communities and our system holds a long tradition of giving back to communities in which we work and live. After our founder Mary Ellen Sheets’ first year in business, she donated her profits to 10 different charities.

Franchisees set New Year’s business resolutions for a successful 2016

Written by Jessy Howe

TMT Roanoke,VA

Welcoming in a New Year is often seen as a fresh start for self-improvement in your personal life as well as an opportunity to accomplish new business goals in the year ahead. As we are now halfway into January, personal New Year’s resolutions are in full swing! Many are doing their best to stick to their goals, whether that be to eat better or make visiting family a bigger priority.

Even if you don’t make New Year’s resolutions in your personal life, in business it is crucial, and motivating, to lay out goals early. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we focus on our 2018 vision to guide us forward as a system of one.

“As a new year is upon us I believe it’s very important to step back and assess progress, failures, and opportunities from the previous year, but not spend too much time there,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® President Randy Shacka. “We instead look toward the future and our 2018 vision we wrote three years ago and focus on working backwards on what needs to get done in 2016 to continue to build upon the strong brand.”

If your business would benefit from ramping up recruiting efforts or becoming more involved in your community, now is the time to make it happen!

We spoke with some of our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisees to see what their New Year’s business resolutions are for 2016!

Jeremy Brown, franchisee of Delaware South, Del.

  • To develop a much stronger presence in the local communities within our marketing territory, both through an improved effort in giving back to the community, and through a much better grassroots and networking effort.
  • To position ourselves, both from a personnel and resource perspective, to open two satellite offices in early 2017.

Chris Kavanagh, franchisee of Roanoke, Va.

Roger Boyer, franchisee of Columbia, S.C.

  • To get our customer referral rating up to 97 percent.
  • To run 30 trucks by summer.
  • To finish in the system’s top 10 in gross revenue for sales this year.

Below are a few resolutions to implement in your business to keep you ahead of the competition!

  • Evaluate your mission statement – With your ever-evolving business, take a moment to review your mission statement and ensure it is still in line with your overall brand and business goals.
  • Invest in technology – Check up on everything from computers to high-speed Internet. Do away with outdated technology and upgrade to more efficient and effective tools, programs, and hardware to benefit your business and customers.
  • Network – Integrate your business into the community you serve by becoming a member of community organizations, attending beneficial events, or by hosting your own professional social event.
  • Plan ahead – Mark your calendar months in advance with all the upcoming important dates. Staying organized will only help with all that will happen in the year ahead!
  • Listen – Use the resources around you. Ask for feedback from your employees, advisors, and customers. The various perspectives will help you improve your business in multiple areas and they will appreciate your sincere consideration of their opinion.

If you’re still having a difficult time thinking of business resolutions, the web can provide a wealth of additional ideas. Sites such as USA Today have great lists to build upon.

“Having a vision is powerful and helps paint a clear picture of what life looks like within our business down the road and for 2016,” said Shacka. “We are very excited for another record-breaking year that helps propel the brand forward through focusing on our customers, our people, and our communities.”

To say 2015 was a record-breaking year would be an understatement. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® shattered records across the board, hit the highest revenue month in system history, and introduced a variety of new tools and resources for franchise use. Overall, it surely was a phenomenal year and follows consecutive years of momentum built by the system.

Franchises experienced many changes, updates, and new projects, resulting in shared learning and noted areas for improvement; however, from these hurdles, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® continued to expand and thrive, resulting in a record-breaking year of growth and success. The system is concluding with 72 months of record growth, more than $400 million in revenue, a 95.04 percent customer referral rate, and a 4.72 satisfaction rate.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has grown and thrived, as a system, since the housing crisis of 2008/2009. The company has gone through tremendous change yet the results continue to show progress as a brand. Over this period, results are impressive compared to the industry, franchising concepts, and many companies of similar size.

As we enter 2016 and reflect on 2015, we remember the achievements of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®:

  • TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® expanded into its 39th state with the opening of the Sioux Falls, S.D. franchise.
  • The annual Career Move Month campaign hit record numbers. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® exceeded their amount of hire goals during the third annual Career Move Month, with 1,209 hires for the month of March 2015. Additionally, the system attracted 8,748 applicants.
  • The 2015 Movers for Moms® campaign gathered an incredible 230,000 items for moms across the country, increasing the donation items collected last year.
  • Franchise Business Review ranked TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® as one of the 50 Multi-unit Franchises for 2015. This was TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s 10th year in a row earning high rankings in the Franchise Business Review.
  • We celebrated the 5.5 millionth move by donating $550 to a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® customer.
  • The first-ever Mary Ellen’s Moving People Forward® scholarship program concluded in September 2015, naming Randi Bloodworth as the winner and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s newest franchisee. Bloodworth is expected to open the new Pearland, Texas, franchise in March 2016.
  • The Canadian franchises achieved a nine percent growth and increased their referral rate from 92.43 percent in 2014 to 94.16 percent in 2015. In addition, Canada opened two new territories this past year.
  • TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® celebrated its 30th anniversary. Thirty years ago Founder Mary Ellen Sheets took the plunge to start a local moving company with the assistance of her two teenage sons, a moving company that would later turn into an internationally-franchised system with more than 340 locations world-wide.
  • Twenty-two new locations opened across the country.
  • Every TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise dedicated countless hours to giving back to their local communities and helping others across the country, truly living out our core value.

Goodbye 2015 and hello 2016! Another record-breaking year being projected with 18 percent growth, 30 new locations, and exceeding a 96.5 percent referral rate!
