The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system is Moving People Forward® once again. On Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, Founder Mary Ellen Sheets, accompanied by President Randy Shacka, ventured to Boston, Mass., to present a $50,000 check to the winner of the second Mary Ellen’s Moving People Forward® scholarship program: Jason Washburn.
In the summer of 2015, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® welcomed five managers from across the system into the brand’s second program. The scholarship is designed to provide current managers with the opportunity to own their own franchise in partnership with their existing franchisee. After more than a year of extensive training in sales, human resources, customer service, and fiscal responsibility, the program saw two final candidates in the running. Concluding a comprehensive, rigorous interview with the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® executive team in which participants must present their business plan and undergo a challenging question and answer session regarding their leader and ownership capabilities, a winner was determined.
Washburn of the Boston, Mass., location will now be resigning his role as multi-unit general manager to hold the title of a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisee. He has been a part of the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® family since February of 2011, and after learning about the opportunity to own his own TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® location he jumped at the chance to be a part of the scholarship program.
As the winner of the program, Washburn is awarded $50,000 that will go toward opening his own franchise. By March 2017, he will be expanding the brand into Orange, N.J. As outlined in the program’s agreements, Washburn will maintain ownership of the location with multi-unit Franchisee Jason Judson, multi-unit Franchisee John Judson, multi-unit Franchisee Joel Trost, and multi-unit Franchisee Brian Stern.
“Since Jason took the position as the general manager for our Boston locations, I have seen tremendous growth,” said Stern. “The majority of this growth came shortly after he joined the scholarship program. Once the program began, Jason took his abilities to a whole new level. Since joining, he has a sense of confidence and ownership unlike any I’ve seen from him before. He attacks everything with a desire to be the best and break barriers. Having new franchisees like Jason representing our brand shows just how bright our future is. I couldn’t even begin to tell you how proud I am to see where he is today. He is “old school” and I like that. Jason has worked hard to get to where he is today. He has a motor unlike most, and that’s what separates him from the rest.”
Throughout the entire year and half that Washburn was part of the scholarship program, his franchisees truly supported and embodied every opportunity that the project held. They worked with Washburn, guided him throughout this journey, and could not be more excited to step into this next chapter with their new franchise partner.
“We are so blessed to have a scholarship program like this within our system,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Human Resources Director Sara Bennett. “Not only does it allow managers to work closely with Home Office staff and their franchise owners, but it provides them with an abundance of opportunities. People can truly excel their careers within TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, they have the tools and resources to get them to that next level, and this program is just one of many that this system offers.”
Needless to say, the second Mary Ellen’s Moving People Forward® scholarship program was just as much of a success as the inaugural rollout which was awarded to Randi Bloodworth, franchisee of the Pearland, Texas, location. General Manager Dan Pettit of the Grand Rapids South, Mich., location, was the remaining participant alongside Washburn. And, although Pettit was not named the winner, he was awarded $10,000 to go toward opening his own franchise. With his hard work and dedication, we know he will continue to be a successful leader for our system.
“The talent that we see from the scholarship program participants is immeasurable,” said Chief Executive Officer Jeff Wesley. “For more than a year we get to see managers from different locations throw themselves into learning every facet of the franchise business model, while building their TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® knowledge base. We could not have asked for better candidates than Jason and Dan. The two worked so hard throughout the duration of the program, utilizing the support of their franchisees as mentors each step of the way. These heavy lifters are committed, not just to excelling in their own TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® careers, but are dedicated to the expansion efforts of this entire system. We are so proud of Jason and what he will do for this brand in the New Jersey market, and we are so excited to see where TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® will take Dan. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for these TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® leaders.”
Congratulations, Jason, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®‘s newest franchisee! The entire system is so proud of you and we cannot wait to see your success as you grow the brand throughout New Jersey.
