Ben Heslop easing into role as new TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchisee in Montana

When you spend time working in the world of banking and sales, you develop a strong understanding for how money works and what it takes to run a successful business.

This was the case with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Franchisee Ben Heslop, who along with his father, Jim, and his two brothers opened, one of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s first locations in the state of Montana in April of 2017. The franchises they opened are part of our mini-market franchise model, which brings the same level of customer service and moving capabilities as our standard franchises, but in a model that is able to support smaller regions.

Heslop’s previous business experience has been mostly focused around the money side of things, and this has translated well as he became a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchisee.

Ben-Hesslop“I was in industrial distribution for nine years in sales and operations,” Heslop said. “I was able to grow a branch that was producing about half a million a year in revenue, and by the time I left, was producing 5.5 million in revenue.”

Heslop gained a ton of experience selling 3M products over those nine years, which are generally higher-priced items, but items that are often better quality than what other competitors are offering. He’s used this strategic mindset to help him sell moving services to their customers in the Kalispell area.

“I was able to sell a higher-priced item, and offer a superior service, and it all fell into place,” Heslop said. “I’ve taken the same mentality and applied it to our new franchise. This has helped us get off to a great start in our first year.”

Heslop and his family are learning as they go in the franchised moving business, but luckily, Ben had previous experience running banking for two separate TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchises in recent years, giving him an idea of just how the business operates.

As he has become a franchisee of his own, he’s taken a great interest in learning the ins and outs of the business, and making sure he’s up-to-date on everything from regulations in the state of Montana, to hiring the highest quality staff possible to deliver outstanding moving services to his community.

“In addition to DOT regulations, I’ve been focused on hiring a good team and balancing hours, because I don’t want to overwork our team,” Heslop said. “I’m also working to relay the message to our team that they need to communicate constantly, whether it’s good or bad information. It’s a bit different working with individuals rather than business-to-business, but ultimately, everyone wants the same thing – excellent service, and to know what’s going on.”

Heslop and his family – along with Devin and Rosita O’Neil – opened the first two mini-market franchises, both in Montana last April, and have gotten off to strong starts. This is an encouraging sign for those looking to franchise with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, particularly those who have interest in areas of the country with a smaller demographic.

Heslop has recommended this business opportunity to people, and highlights a key factor as the bottom line to why people should be interested.

“I would and have recommended franchising with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK,” Heslop said. “At first the royalties look like a lot, but when you see what you are getting back, that number proves to be worth every single penny.”

Moving forward, Heslop and his family are working to keep their new location in Kalispell running strong, while continuing to learn the nuances of running a moving business and continuing to spread brand awareness in Montana.

“I’m looking forward to continued growth, the ability to offer jobs in our community, and excelling and creating a positive image with the community,” Heslop said. “We also have aspirations to expand and open new franchise locations in the future.”
