Florida franchisee applies Home Office work experience into franchise ownership position

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisees come from all different professional backgrounds, and that’s what allows our franchisee network to be so diverse and a fantastic resource for new owners in the system.

For Franchisee Pete Ruffing – who operates the Jacksonville and St. Augustine locations in Fla. – his TWO MEN AND A TRUCK journey started when he worked for the Home Office location in Lansing, Mich., as a franchise business consultant. Ruffing was able to learn the system from a broader perspective overseeing franchise operations, and the allure of the frontline lifestyle was what interested him in becoming a franchisee.

“What attracted me to the position was the excitement and energy of working on the frontline of a dynamic industry in a vibrant market like Jacksonville and St. Augustine,” Ruffing said. “Both of my previous career stops included that type of connection and energy to the consumer, and I was attracted to that more than anything.”

Having spent the majority of his professional career working in the new home construction industry and also the food and beverage industry, Ruffing was well-versed on both people transitioning into new homes, and the customer-service industry.

He officially became a franchisee on April 1, 2016, and hasn’t looked back, applying his wealth of business knowledge into this new ownership role.

Pete Ruffing“Nothing can quite prepare you for the frontline operation of franchise, or in my case, two franchises,” Ruffing said. “Having the experience I did and having the varied skill-set both of my previous careers required, I was able to draw on those experiences and adapt them to a franchisee role.”

With any transition into business ownership, there have been some challenges that Ruffing has faced, but also some aspects of the job that have proved quite enjoyable as he works in the sunshine state.

“The biggest challenge was understanding our market in all the ways I needed in terms of recruiting and marketing grass roots efforts,” Ruffing said. “For my favorite parts of the job, my top three would be working with family, the staffs we have in place at our locations, and helping our clients and customers.”

Working as co-franchisee at each of his locations, Ruffing has a solid team in place to help operate the two Florida locations, and with the footprint TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has established in Florida, they find themselves quite busy.

Even though it has only been a little over two years since he began his franchisee endeavor, Ruffing knows what he wants out of both locations, and where he wants to see them go.

“I want to constantly increase our market share, and continue to create growth opportunities for each and everyone one of our employees,” Ruffing said. “Most importantly – I want to have fun doing it!”

For those interested in franchising opportunities – particularly ones with a moving company like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK – there are endless reasons why it’s a journey that should be considered.

In Ruffing’s eyes, the biggest reason he would recommend the opportunity to someone interested is because of the company’s core values and beliefs – something he believes anyone can align with.

“You won’t find a better franchising opportunity if your personal values align with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s core values,” Ruffing said. “It is also a very rewarding business to be involved with on so many levels. Making a positive difference in an employee or client’s life is incredibly satisfying. Moving is stressful, and that’s something we hear every single day. Being able to eliminate that stress is rewarding!”
