Shawn Abram left his old job to pursue a new career with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, and it was one simple reason that motivated his career move – he wanted more of a challenge.
Nearly nine years later, it’s safe to say that Abram has taken that challenge head on and certainly made the most of his opportunity with the brand. After joining as a mover, Abram has held just about every frontline position available, working his way up from mover to driver, then leader to driver, safety coordinator, training manager, and now operations manager for the Pittsburgh Southwest and Northeast locations.
“My time with our company has been an exciting journey,” Abram said. “Each day, I have the chance to meet new people, solve challenging situations, and impact the lives of others. Throughout my journey, I have interacted with many great people that have provided me with knowledge and wisdom. It’s great to be a part of a company that genuinely cares about their customers and employees.”
With so many years of hard work under his belt, Abram decided in 2019 it was time to take the next step – working toward becoming a franchisee.
He enrolled in the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Mary Ellen’s Moving People Forward® Scholarship program, a program designed to provide hands-on training and learning for top employees in the system. The winner is awarded with $50,000 toward the opening of their own franchise location and Abram is hoping he can be the next successful winner.
“Professional growth and advancement opportunities are not always available at other companies. However, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has a unique model of promoting from within,” Abram said. “I enrolled in the scholarship program to take advantage of a great opportunity to become a business owner. With the support from my franchisee, the timing felt right.”
While there is still a big chunk of the year for Abram to learn and grow within the program, he has thoroughly enjoyed his experience to this point.
“The experience has been great,” Abram said. “Everyone has been so supportive and encouraging. I have learned a tremendous amount of information in such a short period of time. I have also been able to meet many representatives of the brand through the program’s requirements and networking. The experience comes once in a lifetime, and I’m hoping I make the most out of it.”
Through the extensive training Abram is receiving in the program, there has been much to learn about the business and financial side of things when running a franchise.
He has also worked to refine more of his skills on the operation side of the business, and is learning the finer points of time management, delegation, and prioritizing as a business owner. It’s all part of the process to becoming a successful franchisee, and he’s taking away a wealth of knowledge.
“My biggest takeaways so far are improved leadership, knowledge, networking, expert advice, and helping others to move forward in the process,” Abram said. “It’s been a luxury to be provided with this great opportunity to learn from many experts in the system. Receiving their advice will help me to shorten the learning curve and install procedures for growing our business.”
The announcement is still a ways away from happening and with three other quality candidates competing, Abram knows he has his work cut out for him.
Regardless, he has enjoyed every aspect of the scholarship program, and would recommend it to anyone who is considering taking that next step in their career.
“I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is willing to step out of their comfort zone and embrace a personal challenge,” Abram said. “The demand of the program challenges you to sharpen your professional skills while also acquiring new skills along the way. If you are student of the brand and want to take that next leap in your career, this program is for you.”
