What started out as a simply meeting through a mutual contact would end up putting Blake Casey on a path of business success – one he’s hoping will culminate with becoming a franchisee of his own TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise one day.
Casey – who is currently the franchise manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Grand Rapids South location – didn’t have much experience with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK and had only seen the brand around town. Through a family member, Casey was able to meet Rob Felcher – the Grand Rapids South location franchisee – and learn all about what the brand had to offer. He was instantly intrigued.
“I really liked the atmosphere and the culture that he talked about with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK,” Casey said. “I decided to apply for the operations manager position. I thought it would be a good opportunity to get involved with a great company that offers a lot of opportunity to grow from within. Throughout my time, I have found out just how great it really is. Beyond any of the opportunities I’ve been given, the people I have met have brought me the most pleasure.”
Casey decided in 2019 to take the next step in his journey with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK and enroll in the Mary Ellen’s Moving People Forward® Scholarship Program.
The program was designed to take franchise managers within the company and put them through a year-long training program where the candidates create their own business plan for a franchise. A winner is chosen at the and rewarded with a $50,000 check to open their own franchise location in partnership with their existing franchisee.
“When I first started, one of the managers here in Grand Rapids was involved in the scholarship program,” Casey said. “I was able to see first-hand the benefits and opportunities that the program offered. I was eager for an opportunity to do the same thing. I have always been attracted to owning a business, and I felt the best way to prepare myself was to be involved in this.”
Although it’s still early in the process, Casey has already taken away many pieces from the program and learned some of the finer points of running a franchise..
“The biggest benefit I’ve noticed just the access to all of the materials available from Home Office,” Casey said. “As you work through the assignments, you learn to access and find things that make managing a franchise easier. These tools are something that I use every day and will continue to use at any level of our franchise.”
Win or lose, Casey is soaking up everything he can while he participates throughout the year, and he knows it will make him a more well-rounded member of the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK family.
“My goal no matter the outcome is to take the knowledge I have gained and spread that to the people around me,” Casey said. “I love that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK wants to better their employees, and I would like to do the same. My goal is to create as many new managers and franchisees as I possibly can. Moving people forward is one of the greatest things I feel I can offer to people.”
Past years of the scholarship program have seen both the winners and runners-up go on to open their own franchise locations, and Casey is hoping to be the next in line to follow that path. With so many great candidates currently enrolled, it’s clear that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is in good hands.
For Casey, he would recommend this to anyone currently in the company looking to make the leap, and said there won’t be any regrets for those ready to improve themselves and take their careers to the next level.
“I would recommend the program to managers that are looking to improve or who want more,” Casey said. “This program is a great opportunity to work with a lot of people that have been doing what you’re doing, or have seen what you see. You will learn things you thought you already knew, and you will learn things you had never even thought about. The growth this program can offer is unlike anything I have been a part of before and if you are hungry and willing to learn, this is it.”
