After working nearly 60 hours a week in a factory, Jarrod Brooks decided it was time for a change. He didn’t know what he was looking for, but knew he needed something new in his life.

Growing up on a farm, hard work and manual labor was something that was second-nature to him and when he saw a posting for a position with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, he thought it might be a welcomed change.

“I saw the posting for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK and the thought of manual labor excited me,” said Brooks, who is currently the general manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Lincoln, Neb., franchise. “This company has taught me to live outside my comfort zone and by doing so, it has taken me to new heights and taken me to places I never thought I would go when I walked in on my first day.”

Since joining the company, Brooks’ career has taken off and he’s made huge strides for the Lincoln franchise. As the general manager, he’s helped grow the franchise and this year, after talking with the franchisees at his location, he decided to take his own career to next level when he joined the 2019 Mary Ellen’s Moving People Forward Scholarship Program.

The program was designed to give managers in the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK network a year-long training and educational platform to learn the ins and outs of franchising, with the winner being awarded money to open their very own franchise location in partnership with their current franchisees.

He dreams of one day owning a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise, a dream that was formed the minute he became a father.

“I wanted to show my children that with hard work and determination, you can achieve anything you put your mind to,” Brooks said. “The way I saw it was win or lose, I have been given the opportunity to gain more knowledge and experience through this program, and I’m grateful for that. Plus, I have a great support system with my franchisees and they have worked hard to help me move forward, and I hope to do that for someone else in the future.”

While there is still a long way to go before the completion of the scholarship program, Brooks has already soaked up a wealth of knowledge that will benefit him in the long run, and the experience he is gaining is invaluable.

“The experience thus far has been incredible,” Brooks said. “It has given me a number of challenges and problems to work through. It has also gotten me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to new limits. It has opened my eyes to the different aspects of the company and introduced me to new people and new ideas, ideas which I can take and incorporate into my work and into my teams.”

Through the scholarship program, Brooks has learned how to step back and examine situations within the business from the eyes of an owner, and has also learned to balance work and home life.

It’s a challenge working to complete this training while also staying busy with his current job, but it’s something Brooks said he’s glad he pursued.

“The program teaches you what is needed in every aspect of the business to be successful,” Brooks said. “It challenges you to take what you already know and ties it in with the things you learn to better yourself. I am hoping to be a successful franchise owner by taking the knowledge I’m picking up from this and applying it.”

Win or lose, it’s clear that Brooks has a bright future within the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK family, and he’s keeping his head down and grinding through 2019 as he awaits the announcement of the scholarship program winner this fall.

“I would recommend this program to anyone who is wanting to continue to grow themselves and help grow this company,” Brooks said. “You gain not only knowledge that will help you reach your goals but it also pushes you to look at things you think you already know in a different light. This company truly lives by its mission of ‘moving people forward’, but you have to embrace the opportunities presented to you.”
