Sometimes, the advice and persuasion of your friends can be enough to push you in the direction of taking on a new challenge or risk in life.
Chris Raiber had always liked the idea of owning his own business, but was having a successful career in his own right, and wasn’t quite sure how or when he would ever have the opportunity to chase the dream of business ownership. However, that quickly changed with hearing how successful his friends were as TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisees.
“I have a few long-time friends who became TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchisees around eight years ago, and that definitely encouraged me to come on board,” Raiber said. “They always talked to me about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK and about the moving business. I have been very successful in the past, but there were a lot of unattractive things about being in corporate America. I finally decided that it was the right time to make the leap.”
Raiber committed, made the leap, and recently opened his first TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise in Buffalo, New York, with his friend and current TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchisee, Nathan Berns.
This is major step for both Raiber and the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK brand. For Raiber, it gives him the keys to his long-time desire to own his own business. For TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, it helps the brand expand into Western New York – a place the brand has previously never operated. Raiber is eager to open the first chapter of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK in this area, and feels his past experiences align perfectly with the brand.
“My prior business experience is primarily in customer service, sales, and collections,” Raiber said. “I managed multiple call centers around the United States in various lines of business. Much of that experience translates into this business, since we are dealing with customers on a daily basis.”
This experience will be important for Raiber as he works to establish the brand in Buffalo. He knows that the biggest challenge will be raising brand awareness, and he is ready to put in the work to get customers on board.
“Startups are not easy. While TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has great brand recognition nationwide, it has not had a presence in this area until now,” Raiber said. “We will need to create brand recognition one move at a time. We’ll do that by building a great team that does quality work. I want TWO MEN AND A TRUCK to be the first choice when it comes to moving in Western New York.”
Raiber’s opening of a franchise this year would be a milestone moment in any year, but given the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, it holds even more significance, as Raiber and the brand encountered a variety of hurdles throughout the process.
Resources outside of the brand like regulatory bodies, agencies, banks, and more were causing delays and getting the necessary approvals and authorities in the state of New York took on an extra challenge.
“TWO MEN AND A TRUCK was very helpful in the process,” Raiber said. “We made the best out of an unfortunate situation. We still opened, and I’m thankful to have been able to do so.”
Now that they’re in operation, the normal tasks of building a staff, increasing brand awareness, and getting exposure in the area will occupy Raiber’s time. His short-term goals are to tackle all of these head on a meet the necessary performance requirements of new franchisees, and for the future, his long-term goals are opening more TWO MEN AND A TRUCK locations.
He’s excited for his new journey and would recommend the opportunity to anyone looking to start their own business.
“I like that you have the best of both words here,” Raiber said. “You have the support and resources of a big business with the Home Office team, while also being independent in running your own small business. Everyone at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has been supportive and helpful.”
