Learning to work with family

Owning a franchise takes significant time, dedication, and trust in your leadership and business partners (if you have them). The Newman brothers — Curtis, Steve, and Kevin — left their familiar lives in Iowa and jumped on an opportunity to take over two, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchises in San Antonio, Texas. Since the three brothers have taken over the franchises they have seen more than a six percent increase in sales growth.newman 1

Before joining the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system, each of the Newman brothers were pursuing very different careers. Steve went to the University of Iowa and earned a law degree and furthered his education at New York University earning a Master’s degree in Laws in Taxation. He worked as an accountant, an attorney, and invested in real estate. Kevin received a finance degree from the University of Iowa and previously worked in data management and mortgages. Curtis graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a degree in business administration and accounting. After graduating, he spent time working as a tennis professional (after he played competitively all four years in college), and worked as a finance manager. Steve, Kevin, and Curtis each have a unique background and their combined experiences bring a variety of skills to their businesses.

Although new to Texas, the Newmans aren’t strangers to the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand.

“Our family has used TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® multiple times in Iowa and we were always very impressed with the service,” said Kevin. “We‘ve used the Des Moines franchise and the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City franchise. Our father and grandfather have each owned their own businesses so that has been our desire ever since we were young kids. Steve and Curtis had previously looked into purchasing FedEx delivery routes, and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® was a similar business model.  When we learned about the opportunity to purchase the only two franchises in San Antonio, we jumped at the chance.”

Owning a business with others requires you to be in constant communication and make large decisions that affect each other and your employee’s lives. You may be wondering how the Newman brothers work so well together.

“It’s actually very easy to work with my brothers,” said Steve. “We all have the same goals and trust each other unconditionally. Furthermore, we know each other so well that we can be unbelievably blunt with one another without affecting our relationship.”

newman 2Kevin agreed and added in the importance of working toward a common goal. “The only way to keep sane with Curtis and Steve is to laugh often and keep reminded of why we decided to become franchisees. Working together has enabled us to have a part in determining each other’s success and while that is something terrifying, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Owning a franchise is still very new to Steve, Curtis, and Kevin. The Newman’s have realized every decision becomes harder and harder when you are thinking about your brothers’ future along with your own. On the flip side, it’s exciting for them to picture one another living a comfortable lifestyle based on something you’ve helped to achieve.

While the Newman’s are a newer addition to the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system, we already see them doing great things in San Antonio. Keep up with Curtis, Steve, and Kevin’s story on our blog! In a few short weeks we’ll dig deeper into what life is like owning a business with your siblings.

Knowles trio takes TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchising opportunities by storm

The beginning

Larry Knowles, Jeff Knowles, and Ryan Knowles are a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisee trio with six locations in Florida. Larry, Jeff and Ryan’s father, conducted his first move in March 1993. Since then, his footprint has expanded with the help of sons Jeff and Ryan.

Nineteen years after their first franchise opened, the family has taken their business by storm and expanded the brand in Florida with six locations in Tampa, Pasco, and Spring Hill.

Together, the Knowles family, who are Michigan natives, tells an interesting story.

Larry’s friend, Duane, was a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisee who loved the system and had great success as a small business owner. It didn’t take Duane much time to convince Larry to open a franchise in Tampa, Fla. After all, Larry is a CPA with a diverse background in accounting which was a huge draw when he considered starting his own business.

“The thought of getting out of the Michigan winters and running my own business was very appealing,” said Larry. “It was a little scary moving to Florida without knowing anyone.”

Larry picked up his family and moved to Florida at the end of 1992. Little did he know how much his life would change and how much success would be achieved as a business owner.

Expanding their business

Five years after Larry’s franchise opened, Jeff became involved in the business. Ryan saw the opportunities TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® offered and joined his family members a few years after Jeff. Once Larry’s sons joined him, the dream team was created, and they were able to significantly increase the number of trucks and franIMG_0240chise locations.

“With them on board we became more efficient, I would recommend anyone starting a franchise to have a family member working full-time in operations,” said Larry. “Right now, we have five relatives working with us, at one time we had six!”

Jeff reminisced on their team communication and giving back to their employees.

“We’ve been lucky enough to have three minds tackling issues,” said Jeff. “We communicate well (most of the time) and this communication has taken a vital role in our success. Our management is eager and confident and can see the big picture at the end of the day. Not only are our managers great, our frontline staff – movers, drivers, customer service representatives — are, too. Our frontline lives out the core values and we give back to them because of it. Without our frontline, we’d be out of business. Sometimes that’s easy to forget.”

The future

It’s clear that talking about future business plans excites Larry, Jeff, and Ryan and they are eager to continue expanding their footprint even more. As a system, we’re excited to see what is in store for the Knowles family!

“We’ve been blessed to have great employees in place that we trust and are extremely confident in,” said Jeff. “It’s exciting to watch them grow as managers and hopefully franchisees.”

The Knowles invest a lot in their employees which is why we believe they’ve continued to see success through the years. To learn more about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisees subscribe to our blog.

Mom and businesswoman. It can be done!

This month, we celebrate Mother’s Day. We celebrate our mothers, grandmothers, God mothers, aunts and motherly figures in our lives. Face it, being a mom is hard work. What about the mothers who also work full-time as business owners? How do they do it and what’s their secret?

Erin Whitty is a mother to three adorable little ones and a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisee. She earned her degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina, has been part of the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand since 2001, and has loved watching the system grow and evolve over the years.Erin 2

After working in the system for 12 years, Erin opened a franchise in downtown Atlanta, Ga., on May 1, 2013.

“It’s been my goal since joining the Norwalk, Conn., franchise, all those years ago, to one day become a franchisee.”

Erin’s hard work and success hasn’t gone unnoticed. Right now, she is in the process of opening up a second franchise in Houston, Texas.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we wanted to dig a little deeper to see how Erin finds the time to balance both her work and family schedules.

“If you’re fortunate enough to have a supportive family like I do (spouse, parents, etc.), they will help you achieve and maintain a sense of balance but you have to allow yourself to ask for their help,” said Erin. “It’s the only way I survive balancing a growing business and being a mother.”

Erin believes we are given the opportunity to influence the lives of the people that we encounter, specifically, our children.

“My hope and dream is that, as a mother and a business woman, I show my children a spirit of determination and self-discipline balanced by compassion and honesty they will want to imitate,” she said.

Whether you realize it or not, your children take in everything you do. Their minds are constantly absorbing and taking notes on your actions, work ethic, and demeanor. As a business owner, it’s imperative to teach your children about hard work, dedication, selflessness and much, much more.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® first quarter success

As first quarter ended, we had many incredible and inspiring stories from our franchises across the country. As numerous milestones were made, records broken, and charity hours donated, there were two stories that stuck out.

Welcome to South Dakota

Hard work and dedication across the system allows us to grow and expand our brand. This story is no exception. Franchisees Jeff Lodike and Steve West expanded the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® footprint once again, opening their first franchise in a new state, South Dakota!39th state graphic 1-01

Business partners Jeff Lodike, Steve West, Joel Trost, John Judson, and Jason Judson are all part of a powerhouse franchisee team. All franchisees have been instrumental in the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system and have created many career opportunities for their employees.

“It is very exciting to have the exposure and continue the growth of our brand,” said Franchisee Jeff Lodike. “Opening in a new state is an added bonus, we are just glad to be a part of it!”

Jeff, Steve, and their busiSD first moveness partners have had plans to expand for some time.

“We reached out to Home Office and asked for advice on available territories in the Midwest, and Sioux Falls was at the top of the list,” said Jeff. “After we initially researched and visited a few other areas, we were sold on Sioux Falls immediately. The area has a rapid growth rate, great people, and is just gorgeous.”

Not only is TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Sioux Falls a milestone for Jeff, Steve, and their entire team, but it is a huge milestone for our brand.

Our footprint is growing and we are officially serving customers in 39 states!

Congratulations, guys!

Living our giving back core value

Giving back to the community is a core value we see displayed daily throughout the system. Whether you are in California, Connecticut, or anywhere in between, generous charitable efforts are evident at each TWO MEN AND A TRUCKLV customer® location.

This particular story took place on March 16, 2015. Franchisees Bill Bass and Don Hughes opened their second Las Vegas location in early March. On this day, they conducted their first move at absolutely no cost to the customer.

“The first move was great,” said Kirk Phillips, marketing coordinator at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas. “Honestly, we could not have grown without the residents of Las Vegas. I feel grateful we were in a position to give away a free move. It was really the least we could do to give back to the great community that has truly embraced us as their moving companLV grand openingy.”

The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® team waited until the end of the move to bring Truckie on site with a goodie bag filled with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® gear and surprised the customer with the good news. Needless to say, the customer was thrilled to be saving more than $1,000after his day-long move. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas South invited the customer to be a part of the upcoming Grand Opening celebration as well.

Way to go, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas!

System Highlights

In addition to the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Sioux Falls location opening and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas South’s free first move, many other incredible things have happened so far this year.

As a whole, our system saw a successful first quarter. More than 3,900 charity hours were donated totaling more than $460,000. More than two-thirds of our franchises performed at least one charity move during the first quarter. Giving back to the community is not just a cliché we talk about, it is a way of life our employees embody daily.

Hiring exceptional employees and creating opportunities for career advancement

Being a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchisee allows you to not only own and run a successful business, but provides the fulfilling opportunity to help establish and grow your team members’ careers. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® our core purpose is to move people forward. It’s not just a phrase that we post on our wall, but rather something our franchisees and teams embody and live every day. We don’t only move peoples’ belongings, we want to ensure we move our frontline staff forward, not only personally but also professionally. In fact, 75% of our managers started in frontline positions and moved into management because they were passionate about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and had a strong support system to encourage them along the way.

One of our leading franchise teams, the Judson group, which has locations across the country from Salt Lake City to Boston, embodies our core purpose and is continually looking for team members who have what it takes to be Move Heroes. We met with them to learn what they look for in talented employees as well as how to ensure employee retention at their franchise locations.

Q: What type of career opportunities are available at your franchises?

A: We really have endless career opportunities at our locations across the nation. In fact, we have some franchise partners now that started out being movers. For example, Jeff Lodike and Steve West are our friends and business partners who are currently busy opening their Sioux Falls franchise location. Jeff started as a driver and eventually became our move manager while Steve came on as a dual general manager. Sioux Falls will be the first franchise location in South Dakota and marks the 39th state for brand presence and we can’t wait to see what they do.

Q: What type of qualities do you look for in applicants?

A: Drive, ambition, and confidence are the three most important qualities we look for in every position.

Q: What do you do to move people forward in your franchise locations?

A: Our goal is to not only hire employees to exceed our customers’ expectations but we also want to give them the opportunity to learn and succeed in their own career paths. With every person we hire, our ultimate goal is for them to become a partner.

Q: Now that you’ve found talented employees, how do you successfully retain employees and keep them happy?

A: It’s all about the culture. It’s vital to make your business the one that’s fun to go to everyday and that people are proud to be part of. The key is to really listen to what your employees and partners are saying.

Q: What is your biggest strategy when it comes to recruiting for jobs? What has been the most successful?

A: I would say our most successful avenue has been reaching out to local colleges. We will get a lot of applicants this summer from the local community colleges we’ve visited since it is a perfect summer job that can later turn in to a career. Lately, we have had a lot of success with applicants from military organizations since their core values align so perfectly with ours.

Inspiring personal growth within your business

Upon recently reading an Entrepreneur article on our Greenville, N.C. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Franchisee Brian Churney and the noises he listens to in his franchise to indicate he’s operating a healthy business, it inspired me to think about our franchise system’s success over the past six years — clearly not just sounds to be heard. But emotions to be felt, personal career growth to be seen, and businesses flourishing all around the country and world.

We are a franchise system. A powerful one at that. We move people and businesses every day. Some could say we are the experts in what is the most stressful life event. We are the fastest-growing moving franchise system in the world. And we aren’t stopping anytime soon.

This leads me to share one of the system’s best growth stories. Franchisee John Judson and his family grew a career with the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system over the last 20 years. It started with one single franchise in St. Louis, Mo., back in 1994. And today, it’s now a 15-franchise operation in four metropolitan areas — St. Louis, Chicago, Salt Lake City, and Boston. In 2001, John brought on his brother Jason as a partner of the business after working together for four years. John and Jason continue to invest not only in the business, but the people they hire.

“There are many opportunities out there and as we have managers that develop within our franchises, they eventually become our partners,” said John. “We bring different personalities to the table which gives us a wide view on how to be successful.”

This practice has allowed their franchises to grow exponentially — shattering system records left and right and giving them additional opportunities to expand their franchise profile across the country.

“The Judsons have continued to grow, bring on new talent, stay engaged with corporate, evolve, and change with the system,” said Jeff Wesley, CFO of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/International, Inc. “Adding depth to their bench has allowed them to grow the long-tenured St. Louis mark to close to $7 million annually while expanding in Chicago, Boston, and Salt Lake City. No franchise has been able to set this record since, and adding those resources and investing in their people has allowed them to achieve close to $18 million in revenue last year.”

“Watching each other develop personally and professionally has been the biggest reward,” said John of working with his brother Jason. “It’s important that when going into business with family, to set clear expectations right from the start in order to be successful.”

“The system has earned record success over the last five years,” said Jeff. “I am proud to see new owners coming into the system, but it’s also great to see current owners buying additional locations and benefiting from the momentum we have gained. Our system is founded on giving back and this is another way I see we do. We all win as the system continues to grow to new levels.”

John and Jason have set an excellent example of what multi-unit franchise leadership looks like within the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system. Bringing in the New Year and reflecting on 2014

Happy New Year! Declare a diet or exercise goal. Check something off your bucket list. Spend more quality time with family. The New Year is centered around creating resolutions which are many times forgotten after a few short months. In addition to creating personal resolutions for yourself, it’s imperative to set goals for your business, too. After all, ‘tis the season for new beginnings. But, let’s not forget to look back on all of the tremendous accomplishments 2014 brought!

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® ended 2014 witTwo Men and a Truckh a bang. Surpassing the addition of 18 franchises in 2013 by signing the 30th franchise agreement of the year December 22. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and its nearly 2,200 trucks are on a roll.

“Customers continue to support and want us to expand. The bigger our footprint has become, the more people know and understand our brand,” said CFO Jeff Wesley. Ultimately, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® wants to have a presence across the nation with the services and exceptional customer service for which the company is known.

The game plan for 2015? An expansion across California and the western part of the country with an overall goal of 30 new franchise signings with 25 franchise openings. In addition to pushing growth on the west coast, expansion in all parts of the country, including South Dakota, which will give the brand another notch in its proverbial belt, a footprint which will reach into a total of 39 states.

On an international level, Wesley sees an opportunity for further growth within Canada, specifically Vancouver. An examination of its international strategy will occur mid-year where an effort to plan a pipeline of international growth for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® / INTERNATIONAL, Inc. is slated.

To continue propelling upward and moving careers forward, the brand will run the Mary Ellen’s Moving People Forward Scholarship for a second year. This program rewards TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® managers who go through special training to become franchisees or operators of their own location(s). The training program is taking achieved success, passion, and the strategic-partnership opportunity to the next level. During the training, participants are expected to attend multiple learning sessions and complete several projects and assignments which have been constructed by the corporate office and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise leaders. In 2015, the scholarship winner will be awarded a franchise, and additional managers in the program wiTwo Men and a Truckll each walk away with specific skills they’ve learned throughout the educational process. In an effort to keep building on the program’s success, the company is excited to watch this scholarship roll out for a second time this year and in the years to come.

So, what can business owners do to move their own business forward in 2015? Wesley always recommends business owners take the time to sit down and evaluate 2014 from a business standpoint. Take stock of both the positives and negatives, and create a written plan with goals for the upcoming year. Creating yearly goals for your business creates a vision and direction of where you want your business to go and adds structure and specifics to increase the chances you’ll remain focused on the stated path.

As TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® continues to exceed expectations and goals, we plan to continue expanding in 2015 and beyond. There will be exciting franchise development news all year, and we are looking forward to sharing it with you!

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is making great things happen for the customers and communities we serve. Money and profits help us impact lives, and we are grateful and proud we can make a difference. Visit our website to learn more about our company growth and community involvement.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® moves five millionth customer, reaches tremendous milestone

5 millionth moveTWO MEN AND A TRUCK® definitely knows a thing or two about moving. Just ask the five million customers we’ve moved. The company completed its five millionth move yesterday, an amazing accomplishment for the company which began with two Michigan high school boys hauling trash in their 1966 Ford truck. In fact, our four millionth move was completed only two-and-a-half years ago. Given our 25 years in business, who would have thought the five millionth would happen so quickly?

The five millionth move, sponsored by TSO Mobile, was completed by multi-unit Franchisee Steve Ziara’s Spring, Texas, location. TSO Mobile’s sponsorship included underwriting the cost of the move and a neighborhood breakfast send off for the customers, Hung and Lee Tornthat.

Kicking off the move, Ziara presented the Tornthats with a video message from the original stickmen — CEO Brig Sorber and Executive Vice President Jon Sorber. Brig and Jon thanked the couple for being TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s five millionth move and contributing to our company’s history. Following the heartfelt video message, the Tornthats enjoyed the sendoff breakfast which gave them the chance to not only celebrate the milestone, but allowed them to say goodbye to their neighbors.

Ziara could not have been more ecstatic for his location to be a part of such a momentous occasion within the company.

image (5)“I feel like I’ve grown up alongside TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, and it is an incredible honor to be part of such an historic moment with the company,” said Ziara. “I’m so proud that our team will go down in history as the group that completed the five millionth move! On the off chance that anyone doubted our presence and our staying power within the moving industry, the achievement of this goal and the surpassing of another milestone in the path toward our vision is evidence of the greatness of our company. It is proof that when you combine hard work and determination along with a strong mission and set of core values, anything is possible.”

On behalf of all the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system team members, we want to send out a huge thank you to each and every one of our customers. It is because of all of you we were able to reach this momentous milestone. We want to thank you for placing your trust in TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and for allowing us to continuously exceed your expectations. Thank you for being a part of our history and for sharing this five millionth move with us.

“Words cannot describe how excited and how proud I am of this company for reaching such a milestone,” said Brig Sorber. “This move solidifies just how far TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has come. Each and every franchise has worked so hard to build the brand and grow our footprint, propelling the company to success. We have moved five million customers over the past 30 years, a tremendous feat, making TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® a dominant force. We are the moving company that will never settle and will never stop growing.”

Be on the lookout for our six millionth move. Who knows? It may be just around the corner.
