Communities across the country come together to support moms in need

Written by Jessy Howe

Each spring, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations across the country work to support moms in need by collecting essential care items be delivered just in time for Mother’s Day. Mothers who have been impacted by domestic violence and homelessness often turn to women’s and family shelters during this time of need for support. The harsh reality is these essential care items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, blankets, and socks are often in short supply to these women and their children.

We believe every mom deserves to feel supported, loved, and special regardless of their circumstance. This national program called Movers for Moms® has swept over 39 states and supports hundreds of shelters each year. In 2015, Movers for Moms® collected more than 230,000 essential care items and the 2016 program is wrapping up, as the goal this year was to collect 300,000 items! These generous gifts are collected through community partnerships with schools, banks, and other local businesses. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® teams then pick up and deliver the items to partnering shelters just before Mother’s Day in hopes of making the day special for moms in our local communities.

With more than 330 franchises participating in Movers for Moms®, communities across the country are being positively impacted by the efforts to support moms in need.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas has participated in Movers for Moms® for eight years now and reached their highest collection year to date, delivering more than 7,100 donated items to Safe Nest Shelter. This impressive number is one the veteran participant is proud of as they understand the difference these donations make.

“Domestic violence is on the rise in Las Vegas. It is something that the community sees in the news almost every day,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas Marketing Coordinator Ashlee Wright. “Because of this, individuals and businesses in the community were thrilled to be a part of such an awesome campaign.”

Movers for Moms® would have been hard to miss in Cleveland, Ohio as the program spanned across 16 different cities in the area with donation boxes set up in 30 businesses. Between them, 3,000 items were collected and delivered to WomenSafe, the local Ohio shelter who received the goods.

“We were able to help women who are survivors of domestic violence throughout Northeast Ohio and make others in the community aware that help is available for those in need,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Cleveland Marketing and Recruiting Manager Amy Gladieux. “I was overwhelmed with the amount of items each business had collected. It was a great feeling and provides a sense of teamwork throughout the community.”

A common theme throughout cities hosting Movers for Moms® is community. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Nashville Marketing Director Jenni Hargrove has seen this firsthand hosting Movers for Moms®.

“The best part for me is the feeling of a whole community coming together to love these moms and their families,” Hargrove says of running the Movers for Moms® campaign. “So many partners went above and beyond what I was asking. I had salons and fitness centers asking me if they could host Movers for Moms® events, offering a percentage of their product sales to Safe Haven, connecting me to their friends who were business owners and would want to help … it was such an awesome outpouring of support.”

The outpouring of support exceeded Nashville’s initial goal of collecting 2,000 items and resulted in nearly 3,800 donations for moms and their families living at Safe Haven this Mother’s Day.

Movers for Moms® is very important to us specifically because Middle Tennessee really lacks the ability to help the homeless FAMILIES in our region,” says Hargrove. “Safe Haven is the only shelter in Middle Tennessee that can accept entire families through its doors.”

Each year, the number of Movers for Moms® participants, community partners, donated goods, and moms being supported in communities across the country continue to grow. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all those who played a part in making Mother’s Day brighter for women in need. It would not have been possible without your generosity.

More than 300 franchises are working to make Mother’s Day special for those in need

Did you know 60 percent of homeless women are mothers? We believe all moms should feel loved, regardless of their circumstances, each and every day, but especially on Mother’s Day. Our annual Movers for Moms® program works to support moms impacted by domestic violence and homelessness who may be living in women’s and family shelters. In 2015 more than 230,000 essential care items were collected and delivered to shelters providing joy and support to women in need.

Each spring, more than 300 franchises in 39 states participate and partner with local businesses and organizations to collect essential care items including soap, lotion, toothpaste, and more. Together with our generous donation partners, we hope to collect more than 250,000 items this year!

Right around the time of Mother’s Day, our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® teams will pick up the donated essential care items and deliver them to hundreds of local women’s and family shelters across the country, just in time for Mother’s Day.

“Protecting and supporting domestic violence victims is a community-wide responsibility,” said YWCA West Central Michigan CEO Carla Blinkhorn. “We were deeply touched and heartened by the generous outpouring that the Movers for Moms® campaign brought forth.”

“With the help of our dedicated community partners like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and its Movers for Moms® program, our agency was able to continue our tradition of giving our clients a basket filled with personal care and cleaning supplies,” said Volunteer Coordinator Sherry Martens with the Center for Women in Transition based in Holland, Mich. “Receiving a basket full of products, we think of as staples, is like receiving luxuries to those on a limited budget. Each May Basket gives a sense of renewed hope … a feeling that their community cares for them.”

We’re proud to live out our core value of giving back to the community, not just during the Movers for Moms® program, but year round.

Working to fight back against cancer, 10 cents at a time

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK presenting American Cancer Society check

The American Cancer Society reports more than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. Unfortunately, you likely know someone who is a cancer survivor, who may have lost their battle to cancer, or is currently fighting the fight against this awful disease. The American Cancer Society’s mission is to diminish the suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

While all the core values at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® are important to us, giving back to the community is a core value we hold in our hearts that is unlike the rest. The spirit of giving back instilled by Founder Mary Ellen Sheets has allowed us to impact our communities in a number of ways, including supporting the American Cancer Society. Since 2000, 10 cents of every move has been donated to the ACS contributing in the fight against cancer.

On Wednesday, March 16, members of the American Cancer Society arrived to the corporate office while employees gathered in the lobby to show support. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® President Randy Shacka presented the ACS a check for $49,573.50, a number that surpassed 2015’s donation by more than $4,200.

“We truly believe businesses exist to make their communities better, not the other way around. This past year we celebrated another record year for number of moves (over 495,000) and we have given back countless hours and donations to the communities in which we serve. But we also give back by donating 10 cents of every move to the American Cancer Society, an effort we’ve held strong for more than 12 years,” said President Randy Shacka. “We are honored to continue our partnership with the American Cancer Society because they share the same beliefs as TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and help bring hope in our communities to eradicate cancer. This hits home even more recently as we lost one of our own teammates at home office whom succumbed to cancer, and through Anne’s memory, we will continue this fight in 2016. Every move counts and makes a big difference in what we can contribute each day to the ACS.”

Since the beginning of the partnership more than 15 years ago, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has donated more than $520,000 to the cause.

“We are thankful for our continuing partnership with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® that is helping create a world free of pain and suffering from cancer,” said ACS Senior Market Manager Felicia McMullen. “The money donated helps to provide hope for so many in our local community and nationwide.”

In addition to contributions from each move, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/International, Inc. employees participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event each year in Lansing, Mich., to help promote awareness of the most commonly found cancer in women.

We are honored to be one of the American Cancer Society’s many supporters and feel blessed to be in a position to help. We look forward to surpassing the donation amount in the year to come!

Giving back, not for recognition , but because it’s the right thing to do

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK- Crisis Assistance Ministry

Giving back to the community holds a special place in our hearts. So much, it is a core value that each and every employee lives out on a daily basis in the communities in which we live and work. Although long before it was formalized as a core value, after our founder Mary Ellen Sheets’ first year in business, she donated her profits to 10 different area charities.

Across the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system, our franchises also go the extra mile to ensure their communities are thought of. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Charlotte, N.C., marketing coordinator Monika Markley believes if you have the ability to help, you should. The team is heavily involved in the Charlotte community primarily with non-profit projects where they can utilize their strengths — trucks and labor. Recently, they announced they would be offering free moving services to all Habitat for Humanity new homeowners.

“If we can offer these services to the people who are doing good in the community for free, it allows them to focus more dollars and more time on their mission,” says Markley.

Supporting the community is a year-long effort and truly takes the work of the entire team to make it happen. Throughout the spring, the Charlotte location goes above and beyond with their participation in TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s company-wide cause program, Movers for Moms®, collecting essential care items to deliver to women’s and family shelters near Mother’s Day. In 2015 they had roughly 30 collection partners and ended up with 3,000 essential care items to deliver to shelters in their community. Their goal is to exceed these numbers in 2016.

Come October you will find pink boxes filling the franchise. A portion of the sales are donated to a breast cancer support group, the Carolina Breast Friends, to support and increase awareness of Breast Cancer Awareness month. By the time December arrives, the team is keeping busy with the Salvation Army Angel Tree program, an initiative with more than 12,000 children whose families are in need of assistance to provide Christmas gifts during the holiday season.

“With only two small box trucks and enough gifts for 12,000 children, the Salvation Army needed a way to help with the collections,” explained Markley. “We were able to provide trucks during their big weekend push to collect the toys. We were also able to run pick-ups for their corporate partners, picking up a couple hundred bags of toys at a time from companies like Wells Fargo and GM Financial.”

In January 2016, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Charlotte was honored with the Extra Mile Award on behalf of Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte for their work with the Angel Tree program.

“During their volunteer appreciation luncheon, they recognized a few individuals and businesses that have been instrumental for the drive’s success,” said Markley. “It was a total shock for us to be included in this group.”

Prior to this honor, they also received the 2015 Outstanding Philanthropic Small Business Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, which they were nominated for by Community School of the Arts, a longtime charity partner. The franchise stores extra keyboards, violins, and pianos in their warehouse for the organization and frequently transports the items throughout the year for concerts and events.

“They nominated us in May and we found out in August that we had won! There was a

luncheon in November with over 700 charities and philanthropists in attendance,” said Markley. “To be recognized alongside Bank of America and other big names in the nonprofit world for the work that we do was very humbling.”

While the recognition is certainly appreciated, it is far from the reason the volunteer efforts are done. More often than not, it is done without hesitation. With the flooding that occurred in Columbia, S.C., in October 2015, the team was already prepared to step in and help. They were able to partner with a local radio station to collect bottled water for those who were affected. Markley remembers there being so much water, the truck wouldn’t move due to the weight. They ended up sending three trucks in total to Columbia to deliver the bottles of water.

“It just feels good knowing you helped someone,” said Markley.

Time and time again, we feel blessed to have a strong franchise system and the team members who genuinely care for their communities and pour their hearts into supporting them.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® works to strengthen communities

Written by Jessy Howe

The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system holds a long tradition of giving back to communities in which employees live and work. After Founder Mary Ellen Sheets’ first year in business, she donated her profits to 10 different local charities. Today, we continue to donate 10 cents of every move to the American Cancer Society, the national charity of choice, totaling a donation of more than $450,000 to date. It is this spirit that gives meaning to our motto: “Movers Who Care®.”

Franchises from across the country illustrate the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® core value of giving back to the community by  donating countless hours, valued at nearly $2.5 million annually,  to a variety of charities in addition to our own cause marketing program, Movers for Moms®.

The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® location in Akron, Ohio ran their first-ever Movers for Mutts drive, one of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s five charitable programs, in which items are collected and delivered to animal shelters to help support foster animals being cared for. By partnering with seven local businesses to serve as drop off locations for food, toys, and other essential pet items, Akron was able to collect 357 items and donate nearly $250 to One of a Kind Pet Rescue, the largest no-kill animal shelter in the county.

“We were blown away by the support of the local businesses. When we mentioned our Movers for Mutts drive many businesses jumped on board and even came up with their own promotional offering to help increase the donation efforts,” said Franchisee Vicki Voth. “The generous out pour of support showed us that this area loves their animals and are thrilled to have the opportunity to help out a local shelter that places thousands of cats and dogs in happy homes every year. We cannot wait to expand this effort in the years to come by adding more events and drop off locations!”

While Vicki and her team worked to support animals, the Gainesville, Fla., franchise focused their efforts on a local toy drive hosted by the Gainesville/Alachua County Association of Realtors (GACAR) for the fifth consecutive year.

A vital role during the GACAR Toy Drive is the pick-up, transportation, and delivery of donated toys to the Children’s Home Society of Florida, Mid-Florida Division. This is where TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® steps in.

This year, the toy drive received their largest donation to-date. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Gainesville Director of Marketing and Business Development George Baldacchino says it is a blessing to be in a position to help.

“These types of events allow us to live all of our core values,” said Baldacchino. “Something that touched me is when we were delivering the toys, several members of the Children’s Home Society staff teared up and became very emotional. We were able to help those whose entire professional life is designed to help these children in foster care and it meant so much to them.”

Employees throughout our system share the joy that serving their local communities brings and often times say community service opportunities are a rewarding aspect of being in our system.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® North Las Vegas Marketing Coordinator Ashlee Wright shares this feeling after their first year participating in the Diaper Drive hosted by the Las Vegas Diaper Bank, an organization providing diapers and supplies to families in need.

“My favorite thing about working for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is the commitment that each employee has to giving back to the community,” she said. “All the charity events that I have been a part of are so life changing.”

The North Las Vegas franchise was able to assist by providing the move services to transport the diapers collected as well as spreading the word and promoting through social media to increase donations.

Like many franchises across the country, North Las Vegas also works closely with Cheeriodicals to deliver “boxes of cheer” to hospitalized children who need a lift in spirits.

“We have partnered with the local office in each market we’ve delivered to children’s hospitals or Ronald McDonald Houses,” said Cheeriodicals President Gary Parisher. “We have now made more than 40 deliveries to children’s hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses with the local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® office leading the delivery.”

It is our goal to serve those in need and make our local communities a better place to live. We strive to continue offering local support in 2016 and look forward to the opportunities ahead of us. When we work as a system of one, what an impact we can make.
