ACS-Presentation-Mar2017-2

Giving back to the community is the platform on which TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has been built, and when Founder Mary Ellen Sheets formed the moving company back in the ‘80s, she made sure that charitable work would remain a top priority for the foreseeable future. In fact, the first $1,000 profit she earned, she split and donated to 10 different Lansing, Mich., area charities! Continue reading

Tis’ the season to give back and give thanks

Written by Erik Sargent

Here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, giving back to the community is something we take seriously, and is practiced intently from top to bottom, company-wide each and every day. The Core Values are a way of life, and we are always looking for ways to help out and keep moving people forward.

Often times it’s with our moving services, but each franchise around the country makes it a point to do charitable work in their communities, striving to make a difference and impact on the lives of those around them.

One great example is the annual Movers for Moms® program that runs each spring and culminates on Mother’s Day. Each franchise location in the country collects essential care items for local mothers in need, and delivers them to domestic abuse and homeless shelters so the moms feel extra special on a day that might otherwise have been forgotten. This year, we were proud to have collected more than 280,000 items!

Additionally, the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system donates 10 cents of every move to the American Cancer Society and has given more than $520,000 to the cause.

This fall, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® was involved in numerous charitable organizations and events, and below are some of the standout moments.

Baton Rouge Flood Assistance

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Baton Rouge Flood Relief

On August 12, disaster hit in the state of Louisiana. A broken levee caused a massive flood that took the lives of 11 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

On August 19, the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Panama City team sprang into action and collected donations for the flood victims in Baton Rouge. Movers, managers, and staff members, along with Franchisee Sean Wise, helped the community load a truck with items the Baton Rouge community were in need of most. Working with local radio, TV stations, newspapers, and businesses, they were able to collect 15,000 pounds of donations in one day.

With three truckloads of supplies, they were on their way to help distribute the items across the affected areas.

“With us being a small community and having a former manager who now owns and operates the franchise in Baton Rouge, we felt it was imperative to give back to that community, donate the truck, and volunteer the guys,” Wise said. “It’s part of our company core values, and it’s who we are as a franchise.”

Movers for Military in Pasadena

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Movers for Military

Supporting the men and women who have sacrificed and served our country is crucial, and each fall, these thanks are heard around the country. Being homeless or living is crisis is not something we picture with these heroes, but unfortunately, it is a very common occurrence.

The homeless rate for veterans is between 131,000 and 200,000 nationally, according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. To help out these vets and show our thanks, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Pasadena recently wrapped up their Movers for Military drive to help show support and appreciation for those who have served.

Partnering with YMCA, Embassy Suites of Arcadia, and the Wonder Dog Ranch of Monrovia, they were able to collect essential and comfort items – more than 1,825 donations in all – and deliver them to New Directions for Veterans. New Directions for Veterans was founded to empower men and women who served in the military, and their families, to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

“I love being part of a company that has such a heart for charity and giving back! This time of year, it’s important to be reminded of everything you are thankful for, and how you can impact those who are less fortunate around you,” said Stefanie Shook, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Pasadena marketing manager. “By just a simple donation of some basic necessity items, we were able to make a huge difference in these homeless veterans’ lives!”

Sleeping Out In Detroit and Long Island

All across the country, youth homelessness is an issue, and with the winter cold months coming up, it’s important to help raise awareness and money to help end this tragic occurrence.

Partnering with Covenant House, several TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchises around the system, including Wayne County and New York City, participated in the Covenant House Executive Sleep Out event, which is held to raise awareness for youth homelessness. Executives sleep in boxes in the cities at night, listen to the stories of kids in need, and hold a candlelight vigil. All while raising money for the organization that supports homeless youth.

In Detroit, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Wayne County General Manager Ashley Allen helped organize the company’s involvement.

“We donated all the boxes to shelter the sleepers for the night and also donated a truck for three days to assist with storing all items and gear for the event,” said Allen.

This was the third year Wayne County has been involved in the Sleep Out event, and they have raised more than $350,000 through their work. Numerous youth were invited to come speak, pray, and give thanks at the event.

In New York City, General Manager Gerald Jones organized his location’s involvement, and they too, donated boxes and a truck to the event hosted in Long Island. Jones and Operations Manager Tim Dumpson, slept out at the event along with various other executives, and even New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman.

There are many, many more great examples of franchises donating their time, resources, and manpower to their communities. Stay tuned for additional stories highlighting their positive work!

Honoring our Veterans

Written by Jessy Herman

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an estimated 39,471 veterans are homeless on any given night. In addition, 1.4 million of our veterans are considered at risk of homelessness due to a variety of factors such as poverty, overcrowding housing, and a lack of support networks.

To hear those who have sacrificed so much fighting for our country’s freedom are struggling with these hardships, it begs the question how can we help? It is our belief the brave service men and women who have selflessly served us should never be without basic needs including shelter, food, and most importantly a support system.

As the Movers Who Care®, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® developed the Movers for Military program in an effort to aid veterans in need across the country. Across the country, locations team up with local businesses and schools to collect essential care items and deliver them to veterans living in shelters during Veterans Day.

Our system is very fortunate to have several franchisees with a military background. These men and women are proven leaders who align with our core values and bring an unmatched work ethic.

One of these Franchisees being Joey Hale who was awarded Franchisee of the Year by the International Franchise Association in 2015, a top honor among franchisees throughout the country.

“Prior to joining TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, I served as an intelligence officer for the United States Air Force,” said Hale. “I enlisted while in college. My dad flew in the Air Force, and I had tunnel vision to follow in his footsteps.”

Veterans Day

We are proud to have received several recognitions celebrating our commitment to actively recruiting and supporting veterans. This year we have been ranked 10th on the Military Times’ 2017 Best for Vets Franchise Opportunities, jumping 10 spots on the list from our 2016 ranking.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has also earned a place on the Franchise Business Review Top Franchises for Veterans list in 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Despite the many efforts to assist veterans across the country, we know there is still a great deal of work to be done to provide hope for our country’s heroes. In an effort to raise awareness of veterans in need and honor  active military and veterans this Veterans Day we are changing our website colors to reflect the colors of the land of the free and home of the brave.

Working together to move our communities forward

Written by Jessy Herman

The leaves are beginning to change, the weather is cooling, and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations across the country are rolling out fall cause campaigns in effort to give back to the local communities in which we live, work, and play.

Since our humble beginnings, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has prided itself on giving back to the community. More than 30 years ago, our Founder Mary Ellen Sheets donated the first $1,000 she made to ten different local charities. This core value is one we have carried with us and embrace to the fullest each and every day.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has created four programs for our more than 340 locations to host in their communities.

Movers for Military

Veteran’s Day is a time to honor the brave service men and women who have proudly
served our country. Sadly, many of our veterans find themselves going through hardships and rely on the support of local shelters. Movers for Military works to provide critical assistance for veterans in need by the collection of essential care items. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations team up with local community businesses, schools, and shelters to collect items to be delivered to shelters during the week of Veteran’s Day.

Movers for Mutts

In an effort to keep strays and foster animals cared for until they find their forever home, Movers for Mutts was established and has been hosted all across the country. The program aims to collect food, toys, and other items these pets may need to make life in a shelter more comfortable.

Movers for Meals

Families facing hunger crises in our local communities are far more common than many might think. This is where Movers for Meals helps. To aide those struggling to put food on the table, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchises host the Movers for Meals food drive during the fall months concluding just before Thanksgiving. Non-perishable food items which are collected with the help of local organizations, business partners, and schools, are donated to food pantries and shelters.

Truckload of Warmth

One of the newest programs over the past few years, Truckload of Warmth is dedicated to collecting new or gently used warm weather wear including coats, boots, hats, gloves, and anything else needed to stay warm during the harsh winter months.

Communities across the country come together to support moms in need

Written by Jessy Howe

Each spring, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations across the country work to support moms in need by collecting essential care items be delivered just in time for Mother’s Day. Mothers who have been impacted by domestic violence and homelessness often turn to women’s and family shelters during this time of need for support. The harsh reality is these essential care items such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, blankets, and socks are often in short supply to these women and their children.

We believe every mom deserves to feel supported, loved, and special regardless of their circumstance. This national program called Movers for Moms® has swept over 39 states and supports hundreds of shelters each year. In 2015, Movers for Moms® collected more than 230,000 essential care items and the 2016 program is wrapping up, as the goal this year was to collect 300,000 items! These generous gifts are collected through community partnerships with schools, banks, and other local businesses. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® teams then pick up and deliver the items to partnering shelters just before Mother’s Day in hopes of making the day special for moms in our local communities.

With more than 330 franchises participating in Movers for Moms®, communities across the country are being positively impacted by the efforts to support moms in need.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas has participated in Movers for Moms® for eight years now and reached their highest collection year to date, delivering more than 7,100 donated items to Safe Nest Shelter. This impressive number is one the veteran participant is proud of as they understand the difference these donations make.

“Domestic violence is on the rise in Las Vegas. It is something that the community sees in the news almost every day,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Las Vegas Marketing Coordinator Ashlee Wright. “Because of this, individuals and businesses in the community were thrilled to be a part of such an awesome campaign.”

Movers for Moms® would have been hard to miss in Cleveland, Ohio as the program spanned across 16 different cities in the area with donation boxes set up in 30 businesses. Between them, 3,000 items were collected and delivered to WomenSafe, the local Ohio shelter who received the goods.

“We were able to help women who are survivors of domestic violence throughout Northeast Ohio and make others in the community aware that help is available for those in need,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Cleveland Marketing and Recruiting Manager Amy Gladieux. “I was overwhelmed with the amount of items each business had collected. It was a great feeling and provides a sense of teamwork throughout the community.”

A common theme throughout cities hosting Movers for Moms® is community. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Nashville Marketing Director Jenni Hargrove has seen this firsthand hosting Movers for Moms®.

“The best part for me is the feeling of a whole community coming together to love these moms and their families,” Hargrove says of running the Movers for Moms® campaign. “So many partners went above and beyond what I was asking. I had salons and fitness centers asking me if they could host Movers for Moms® events, offering a percentage of their product sales to Safe Haven, connecting me to their friends who were business owners and would want to help … it was such an awesome outpouring of support.”

The outpouring of support exceeded Nashville’s initial goal of collecting 2,000 items and resulted in nearly 3,800 donations for moms and their families living at Safe Haven this Mother’s Day.

Movers for Moms® is very important to us specifically because Middle Tennessee really lacks the ability to help the homeless FAMILIES in our region,” says Hargrove. “Safe Haven is the only shelter in Middle Tennessee that can accept entire families through its doors.”

Each year, the number of Movers for Moms® participants, community partners, donated goods, and moms being supported in communities across the country continue to grow. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all those who played a part in making Mother’s Day brighter for women in need. It would not have been possible without your generosity.

More than 300 franchises are working to make Mother’s Day special for those in need

Written by Jessy Howe

Did you know 60 percent of homeless women are mothers? We believe all moms should feel loved, regardless of their circumstances, each and every day, but especially on Mother’s Day. Our annual Movers for Moms® program works to support moms impacted by domestic violence and homelessness who may be living in women’s and family shelters. In 2015 more than 230,000 essential care items were collected and delivered to shelters providing joy and support to women in need.

Each spring, more than 300 franchises in 39 states participate and partner with local businesses and organizations to collect essential care items including soap, lotion, toothpaste, and more. Together with our generous donation partners, we hope to collect more than 250,000 items this year!

Right around the time of Mother’s Day, our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® teams will pick up the donated essential care items and deliver them to hundreds of local women’s and family shelters across the country, just in time for Mother’s Day.

“Protecting and supporting domestic violence victims is a community-wide responsibility,” said YWCA West Central Michigan CEO Carla Blinkhorn. “We were deeply touched and heartened by the generous outpouring that the Movers for Moms® campaign brought forth.”

“With the help of our dedicated community partners like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and its Movers for Moms® program, our agency was able to continue our tradition of giving our clients a basket filled with personal care and cleaning supplies,” said Volunteer Coordinator Sherry Martens with the Center for Women in Transition based in Holland, Mich. “Receiving a basket full of products, we think of as staples, is like receiving luxuries to those on a limited budget. Each May Basket gives a sense of renewed hope … a feeling that their community cares for them.”

We’re proud to live out our core value of giving back to the community, not just during the Movers for Moms® program, but year round.

Working to fight back against cancer, 10 cents at a time

Written by Jessy Howe

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK presenting American Cancer Society check

The American Cancer Society reports more than one million people in the United States get cancer each year. Unfortunately, you likely know someone who is a cancer survivor, who may have lost their battle to cancer, or is currently fighting the fight against this awful disease. The American Cancer Society’s mission is to diminish the suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

While all the core values at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® are important to us, giving back to the community is a core value we hold in our hearts that is unlike the rest. The spirit of giving back instilled by Founder Mary Ellen Sheets has allowed us to impact our communities in a number of ways, including supporting the American Cancer Society. Since 2000, 10 cents of every move has been donated to the ACS contributing in the fight against cancer.

On Wednesday, March 16, members of the American Cancer Society arrived to the corporate office while employees gathered in the lobby to show support. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® President Randy Shacka presented the ACS a check for $49,573.50, a number that surpassed 2015’s donation by more than $4,200.

“We truly believe businesses exist to make their communities better, not the other way around. This past year we celebrated another record year for number of moves (over 495,000) and we have given back countless hours and donations to the communities in which we serve. But we also give back by donating 10 cents of every move to the American Cancer Society, an effort we’ve held strong for more than 12 years,” said President Randy Shacka. “We are honored to continue our partnership with the American Cancer Society because they share the same beliefs as TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and help bring hope in our communities to eradicate cancer. This hits home even more recently as we lost one of our own teammates at home office whom succumbed to cancer, and through Anne’s memory, we will continue this fight in 2016. Every move counts and makes a big difference in what we can contribute each day to the ACS.”

Since the beginning of the partnership more than 15 years ago, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has donated more than $520,000 to the cause.

“We are thankful for our continuing partnership with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® that is helping create a world free of pain and suffering from cancer,” said ACS Senior Market Manager Felicia McMullen. “The money donated helps to provide hope for so many in our local community and nationwide.”

In addition to contributions from each move, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/International, Inc. employees participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event each year in Lansing, Mich., to help promote awareness of the most commonly found cancer in women.

We are honored to be one of the American Cancer Society’s many supporters and feel blessed to be in a position to help. We look forward to surpassing the donation amount in the year to come!
