In the world of home moving, it’s often a situation that can create a lot of stress and anxiety, and this is especially true when it comes to moving elderly citizens.

Often times when seniors move, it’s from a home that has belonged to them for a large chunk of their life, full of memories, belongings, and family that has lived or visited their home over the years. Saying goodbye to these memories can be extremely difficult, and it’s important to handle these situations with care. Continue reading

Using THE GRANDMA RULE® when moving seniors forward

Grandparents Month

Written by Katie Peterson

One of the most rewarding core values we live by here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is THE GRANDMA RULE ®, which is to treat everyone the way you would want your grandma to be treated. This rule was inspired by our very own TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® grandma, Grandma Eb, who was the company’s cheerleader even before it had a name. In honor of Grandparent’s Month, we are highlighting all the great things TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® does for our senior customers, and how we live out THE GRANDMA RULE® every day.

It is very important for us to exceed our customers’ expectations no matter who they are, but we also know the importance of taking extra care with our senior customers. Many times, seniors have been living in the same home for decades, and moving them not only includes their boxes, but  the 40 years (or more) of memories they’ve built. Our more than 350 franchises consider and approach this challenge head-on with creative and careful solutions.

Senior Sensitivity programs:

Many of our franchises have training programs in place to ensure our movers are able to move seniors without a hitch. Although the moving process can be a stressful change after so many years in a residence, our team has all the tools necessary to make the experience a positive one. Educating our teams on the best practices of these sometimes sensitive moves contributes to our mission of moving customers forward, while exceeding their expectations. A few important aspects of our training programs include:

  • Education about how to interact with senior residents.
  • Information about the stages of dementia and the common signs and stages of aging.
  • Methods of working through tragic or traumatic moving situations.

As the Movers Who Care, our teams are experts in moving into senior communities and are well aware of rules and regulations of the facilities. This knowledge allows for the moving process to be stress-free on the resident, family, and facility staff.

Senior discounts:

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® we value our customers and love showing them our appreciation for choosing the “Movers Who Care®” for their moving needs. To emphasize our commitment, offering a senior discount is something many of our franchises across the country implement.

Caring and careful disposition:

Moving is so much more than picking up and putting down item. Moving out of a long-time home means leaving behind a place that was influential in making a lifetime of memories with family and friends. We understand the skills needed and extra care that should be taken when it comes to these types of moves. More importantly, we know the compassion and caring disposition it takes to move people out of their old home and into a new one. Part of living out THE GRANDMA RULE® involves being understanding, patient, and organized, just as you would want someone to treat your grandma.

Because of our commitment to this core value, we excel in helping move seniors comfortably, as well as six million valued customers who have moved with us. We take pride in our ability to provide great service and exceed our customer’s expectations every day.

Moving retirees with comfort and ease

Written by Jessy Howe

Moving retirees with comfort and ease

Making the decision to move is often the hardest step in the moving process for retirees. Saying goodbye to the home which they have spent a majority of their life making fond memories and raising their family is not an easy thing for anyone to face.

As the Movers Who Care®, we are experienced in handling senior moves and work hard to provide the best moving experience possible. We live by THE GRANDMA RULE®, which is to treat everyone the way you would want your grandma to be treated, a core value modeled after Founder Mary Ellen Sheets’ own mother, Grandma Eb.

Whether the customer is downsizing from their family home of 40 years, or moving into a retirement or assisted living community, our uniformed movers and drivers are professionally trained and committed to making the transition as comfortable as we possibly can.

Nearly 52 percent of all moves are for customers age 50 or older. This number is expected to increase substantially with the baby boomer population in the coming years. In 2015, 19.4 percent of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® sales were to customers 60-69 years old, while 14.3 percent were 70 years or older.

We understand that each move comes with a unique set of needs, which is why we provide tailored services for these more specialized moves. Nothing makes us more proud than hearing from happy customers whose expectations were exceeded during this stressful, and often scary, moment in their lives.

“The moving team, Robert and Mike, were amazing. They were friendly, kind, and courteous. They took great care in handling my property. Moving into a retirement community has been a difficult move for me. Their respect was much appreciated. It was a good start for the next phase in my life.” –Juanita, Downers Grove, IL

“Eric and Thomas were excellent. I’m an 88yr old senior citizen and very nervous about moving. They took special care of me and my property. Eric hugged me when I told him how nervous I was and he said they’d take good care of me. Eric even helped me walk to my front door. They made my move so easy and I thank them.” – Glenna, Hamilton West, OH

“Xavier and Cody did a great job for us. They were polite, friendly, and helpful. They were very careful with Mom and Dad’s things and placed them exactly where we wanted them in their new apartment. This was an emotional move for my parents out of their home of 62 years into a retirement village. At one point Dad told Mom, “I think we are getting special treatment!” Thanks guys for making a potentially difficult day go smoothly.” –Jeanne, Canton, OH
